A Trio of Comforts

This first‑year assignment highlights three enduring sources of comfort in my life: Lego, Batman, and the idea of home. Each has held a meaningful place throughout my upbringing, offering a sense of familiarity and stability. As I have grown, these elements have consistently provided a brief but welcome escape from the demands of the world, grounding me in moments of creativity, imagination, and belonging.

Concept

  • Identify a Lego set that aligns with my interests and presents a manageable construction challenge.

  • Assemble the model, create the accompanying scene assets, and produce a rendered 8×10‑inch still of the completed composition.

Planning

After acquiring the physical model, it became essential to draft a preliminary vision for the overall scene. This planning stage was crucial in determining the creative direction and ensuring that, once a decision was made, I had a clear understanding of the requirements and expectations of the project.

Results

Although the project presented several challenges, including many moments spent staring at the screen while troubleshooting, the final result aligned precisely with my intended vision. The completed low‑poly scene is an exact recreation of my chosen sketch, captured from the precise angle I had planned. Every object within the composition is modeled after a real‑world counterpart, and the background consists of a simple plane textured with a photograph taken in my own kitchen.

Through proper UV mapping, effective lighting, and the use of aperture blur to emphasize the foreground model, the final render achieves depth of field, clear staging, and an immersive visual quality, down to the smallest decals.

For those curious, the comic featured in the scene is Issue #1 of DC’s The New 52 series, released in 2011. The texture images were sourced from my personal copy, with great care taken during the process.
